Spring Break
This past week, I’ve been working for the doctor I used to shadow. It’s been great fun. Working or shadowing for a dentist after acceptance is a very different experience compared to shadowing before acceptance. I feel like I can finally appreciate the art of dentistry instead of trying to cram as much dental jargon in my brain in case I’m called upon for it during an interview.

Two weeks ago, I walked back into the office to drop in and say my hellos. I had been back in the neighborhood for about a month then but so much has been happening in my life I needed some time to “find myself”. I ended up asking if they would mind if I came in to help as a volunteer. Turns out, I have perfect timing. The main receptionist was going to be out the next two days and they really wanted to have me come in. They also wanted me to come in for the week of spring break (- Of course!) So it was set, I was volunteering Thursday & Friday and the week of spring break. Friday afternoon came around and the billing person mentioned to me that the doctor would like to pay me for the week of spring break (- sure, why not?). Wonderful because now I’ve made enough to pad my trip to Germany in two weeks.
On top of that, I’ll be shadowing an oral surgeon tomorrow morning. Excited? Yes, I am. I’ll let you guys know how that fares.

In other news, overweight kids don’t get more cavities. I was a skinny kid with bombed out teeth.
CONCLUSIONS: The data from NHANES III and NHANES 1999-2002 provide no evidence to suggest that overweight children are at an increased risk for dental caries. Although no differences in caries rates by weight were found in younger children, interestingly results from NHANES III suggest that being overweight may be associated with decreased rates of caries in older children.
